Young Adult and Children’s Services at UCLA

YACS in 2013 January 17, 2013

Welcome back to the Winter Quarter, 2013.

There is much to talk about involving the world of Children’s and Young Adult Literature with the ALA Midwinter conference coming up. ALA Youth Media Awards, including the Newberry, Caldecott, and Printz awards, will be announced Monday, Jan. 28th, and there are

sure some good contenders this year! If you want to host a Mock Printz Award at your library’s teen space, YALSA’s Amanda Margis can tell you how.

John Green recently sold-out Carnegie Hall for his anniversary party for his latest novel The Fault in Our Stars. He and his brother called it “Evening of Awesome.” They were joined by the band “Mountain Goats” and author Neil Gaiman made a surprise visit! Who says books aren’t cool?

Locally, we have some great events coming up. Monday, February 4th, YACS will host teen librarian from Santa Monica Public Library, Erica Cuyugan, and UCLA Grad. She will speak at 12:30 pm in GSEIS rm 111. Erica recently completed the Eureka! Leadership Program, a workshop facilitated by California Library Association. She used the skills learned at Eureka! to implement a teen journalism project at her library, “Voices of Santa Monica.” Not only will she speak about this great and innovative experience, but Erica will also share her thoughts on school outreach and partnerships. She has had good and bad experiences with each, and is eager to share some of her new found, professional wisdom.

CONGRADUATION WALL

CONGRATULATIONS YACS CLASS OF 2012!

2011-2012 has proven to be another great year for YACS.  During Fall Quarter, we held a BYOC (build-your-own-costume) event to celebrate Halloween.  Winter Quarter was a particularly busy quarter for us.  Events included a Make Your Own Valentine Card fundraiser in which all proceeds went towards a book donation for Books Beyond Bars.  We also hosted a visit from Dr. Claudette S McLinn.  Claudette spoke to us about the multicultural experience in children’s literature.  Also during winter quarter, YACS had the opportunity to meet with and listen to children’s author and illustrator, Allen Say, at the 2012 Frances Clarke Sayers Lecture.  During spring, YACS teamed up with the Department of Near Eastern Studies to host author, Anushka Ravishankar, otherwise known as “The Indian Dr. Seuss.”

We capped the year off with a final meeting and a congraduation graffiti wall to say goodbye to the second years.

2011-2012 was great . . . and the class of 2012 will be missed.  We thank you for all your advice and good times . . . but 2012-2013 . . . here we come!  Get ready for another great year with YACS =) !
